Do not throw your garbage in private garbage bins after your trip.
Holmsåkoia became a part of the cabin net in 1974 after a short but intensive working period. Before, it was used by lumberjacks working in the surroundings. There was also a stable at the cabin but it burnt down in April 2002 after a try to roast a turkey inside the sauna. This stable accommodated toilet and wood storage as well. Those were rebuilt already in 2002. After more working, the new sauna was finished early in 2004. It got the name "Nansen og Johansen". The river directly next to the sauna can be used for bathing which makes this cabin the perfect sauna cabin. In 2007 the loft was finished with more sleeping facilities so that you can stay there with 20 people now. In addition it's the only cabin with a piano (not tuned of course).

The cabin is placed in the western part of Sylane and the surroundings give good trip possibilities. You only have to come out of the forest. Fongen, Ruten and Tronshatten can be reached. Close to the cabin, in Gammelvollsjøen you can fish. It is fully possible to continue to Hognabu, Stabburet or one of the cabins of Turistforeningen in Sylane.

    Route description

It is easiest to take the bus (to Tydal) or drive by car to the landbruksmuseet at Brekka, ca. 2km east of Tydal Kirke. The bus driver knows where the museum is. So you follow the road along Lødølja.

From the museum it's around 6 kilometres to the cabin, after about 1km there is a barrier (to which we don't have a key), so cars must still park by the museum. You may follow the road all the way to the cabin. Remember to bring skis in the wintertime, as the road is not cleared for snow.

The cabin is placed next to the river Holmsåa. There is a power line 20m from the wood shed.

Another possibility is to follow the instructions to Stabburet, and drive to approximately where to power cable crosses the road. Holmsåkoia is then situated along the power cable to the right (eastwards). This is a pay road and you have to pay for it to Ivar Flakne (Phone: 41418459) in the summer, so call him in advance to make an appointment. In the winter, you don't have to pay, but you still have to call Flakne in advance an make an appointment for him to open the the road for you. However, you will have to cross a stream to get to Holmsåkoia from here, which may be uncrossable or unsafe during certain periods of the year. There is a crossing bridge some 3 km north along the road, but the path from here to Holmsåkoia may be demanding, as there is no road going to the cabin from here. However, this possiblity is could be a nice option for those who wish to visit Stabburet as well as Holmsåkoia, and perhaps also Hognabu.
