The Ilfjellet lies between Soknedal and Meldal. On the east side of it the cabin Iglbu was built in 1964. 200 students helped to carry the cabin, bar for bar, six kilometres. This action was called "Den Digre Dugnaden" (DDD). On Iglbu, time is still calculated back to this time and is given as weeks after DDD in the cabin book. It is currently 3143 weeks since DDD.
The cabin does not have the same name as the mountain. Reason for that is that the Ilfjellet was called Iglfjellet when the cabin was built. Earlier Iglbu was a cabin in the forest in Haltdalen but now it's nicely placed next to a huge fir tree on the southern hillside of Blåerfjellet. The fir tree is protected by the cabin group.
Iglbu is built with logs and has a grass roof which holds the warmth inside the cabin. Earlier there was an open fireplace with kitchen in the outer room. Now it's used for sleeping. In 1984 the fundament was exchanged and a new toilet was built. Normally you see this first when you come to the cabin.
The surroundings of Iglbu are hilly and good for trips, both in summer and winter. In winter you can find nice hills for skiing and fine rest places. Summer and autumn you can go some trips, for example to Ilfjellet. If that seems too long, Gynneldfjellet can be an alternative. Also fishing is possible, you have to buy a fishing card in Soknedal.
The cabin is equipped with modern gas burners (Optimus Vega).
The road Bergsvegen is a tollroad and cost 30,- kr, remember to bring cash!
The bus doesn't go often during the weekend, so remember to check what time it leaves!
There are several alternatives
to come to Iglbu. If you take the Oppdalsbus, you have to leave it at Soknedal Samvirkelag and follow the road up to Gynnella.
Don't cross the railway too early, if you have an old map it doesn't show a new road crossing the railway earlier than the one
you should take!
By car you can also drive up there. Anyhow you should follow the road (or skiing tracks) towards Gynnelvatnet. Keep the height and
swing to the south when coming to the marches besides Gynnella. If you take the bus you can eventually leave it already at the bridge
at Berrdale and go from there.
The road on the southern side of Gynnela leaves from Bergsli. You can follow it until it swings southwest (next to a marsh). Follow
Gynnella in some distance (200-300m) towards Iglbu. This is probably the easiest route.
It's also possible to drive in next to Langvatnet in summer. From there it's easy to follow the path via Svarttjønna. Or you
go from Dragset 3km south of Soknedal.
Iglbu is positioned next to a huge fir tree on the upper end of the hill side, about 250 west of Gynnella. It is best visible from the
stream south of the cabin, but be sure that you follow the right stream! You can start searching from the crossing of the two rivers.
