Øvensenget is poorly insulated, and therefore difficult to heat up during winter. Make sure to bring enough warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag!
Øvensenget consists of two buildings, see the map. Five of the beds are in the main building Valhall, the other three are in Bråkåten.
In 1991 Esten Erlien from Øvensgarden asked NTHI if they were interested in taking care of an alp cabin. This looked like a work-intensive project and first the cabin group was not sure about it also because of the distance from Trondheim, but then the joy of new work won and in 1992 the new cabin was renovated and called Valhall.
You won't find 640 doors there but the hospitality is the same as in Odins hall. Inside the cabin there is sleeping place for five and sitting place for 15. The oven keeps the cabin worm through the night. That can be necessary because in winter the temperature outside can be -40°C. But Valhall is not the only building at Øvensenget. There are also two old stables, which are now used as sauna and campfire place.
The toilet was built with experience from Mortenskåten. Approx. 1km uphill you will find Bråkåten (32V, 0613140, 6922491), also called Elskovsredet, where more people can sleep. The key is lying in Valhall. On the map Øvensenget is called Erlienget.
The weather is quite stable at Øvensenget, dry and cold with good snow conditions. The cabin is situated at ca. 900m and among the highest cabins of NTNUI. In summer you will find a good hiking terrain around the cabin. It's also possible to use it for biking. The orienteering can be difficult. In summer it's as warm as cold in winter and you can have a lot of mosquitoes, be creative or read in the cabin book to banish them!
Most trips from Øvensenget go up Hummelfjell, 1593m, but there are many ways to come up. The view from the top is endless, e.g. you can see Sylane, Forelhogna, Rondane, Dovrefjell and Trollheimen.
You can reach Øvensenget by bus, train or car. In summer it's recommended to take the train to Tolga and use the bike for the 13km to the cabin. You follow the way to Hodalen for 2km, so you take the road to Knappåsen. The signs can be difficult to see but follow them! By car you can drive directly to the cabin. It's a pay road, at Knappåssetra you have to turn left. By bus you go to Hummelvoll. From here it's 6km to go.
During wintertime you have to park your car at the way to Hodal and pass Stortjørna and Knappåssetra. Alternatively you can swing left at Os or Hummelvoll and park next to Brennvollen. From here you follow the path or scooter tracks, pass Håmåla and Bubekken. After coming to a stable with new roof (triangle on the map), you leave the scooter tracks and keep the height. Pass some huts and go southwards until you find Øvensenget.
In winter, we recommend that you are skiing at the ski track, not walking. This is because footprints can ruin the tracks. Also remember to bring enough cloths, since it can be down to -30°C in winter.
